IF YOU DECIDE TO MOVE HERE, DO NOT RENT ...
IF YOU DECIDE TO MOVE HERE, DO NOT RENT A UNIT ANYWHERE NEAR THE TRASH COMPACTORS. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED. 12-31-24 Update: The owners of Cortland Deerfield Station were presented with a quote to add a timing function to the trash compactors so that they would not operate during the night.
The quote was less than 0.27% of their yearly revenue, even after accounting for taxes and being extremely liberal with my calculations. They chose to reject the quote and allow the issue to persist. Thanks for nothing, Cortland.
Short version: I just had to climb halfway into the garbage chute opening to reach for the trash compactor's emergency shut off switch with a clothes hanger because it would not stop cycling. It regularly gets stuck in an endless loop. It's loud, it's adjacent to my unit and it operates at ALL hours of the night. I've complained on multiple occasions to the service team, management and even a company executive. I'm done with all that. I'll just copy/paste this negative review everywhere until someone who gives a damn sees it.
Full version: When I first decided to move in, I was aware of the fact that my unit was right near the trash room on the first floor. No big deal. What I wasn't told was that there is a loud trash compactor that goes off every time someone tosses trash in the chute from the floors above mine. It operates at all hours, some of my neighbors like to toss their trash late into the night and, worst of all, it sometimes gets stuck in an endless loop. I only found out about it when it woke me up my first night here. I certainly appreciate the lack of disclosure regarding this thing when I signed my lease.
The first incident that was extra upsetting was when the compactor got stuck in an endless loop sometime between 3 AM and 4 AM. After lying in bed for about 5 minutes, eyes wide open, waiting for the thing to stop, I decided to get out of bed, get dressed and step outside. I opened the bay door leading to the trash room and immediately saw an emergency shut off switch at the far end. Problem solved, but at the cost of my sanity and having to walk through that filthy, stinky room in my sandals half asleep in the middle of the night.
I've had to do this multiple times now. Luckily, the trash room was always accessible which made it easy for me to shut off the compactor when necessary, though I shouldn't have had to do this to begin with. At some point they put a lock on the bay door. I immediately asked for it to be removed and they did just that. I've had to shut if off multiple times since then as well.
A week or two ago I noticed a lock on the bay door again. I complained again, but this time I never heard a word back from management. The lock wasn't removed and, as a result, today I wasn't able to access the trash room and was forced to climb halfway through the garbage chute opening and reach for the emergency shut off switch with a clothes hanger. This is the second time I've done this specifically.
SO! If you're considering moving to one of the Cortland properties, be mindful of the fact that, despite all their community events and programs, as well as the lovely appearance of their club house and community grounds, they don't actually care about you. The last time I mentioned this problem I was offered the solution of moving to a different unit. How convenient for the next sucker who moves in!
Oh, and for the person reading this who actually gives a damn and has the power to make executive decisions, here's a simple fix: install a timer on the compactors so they don't operate between the hours of 11 PM and 7 AM.
Pull the permits, hire an electrician and get it done. I don't want to hear any excuses. Either do it or don't do it. This review remains here for the time being.
